Application of endoscopic techniques in orbital blowout fractures

Shu Zhang, Yinwei Li, Xianqun Fan

Frontiers of Medicine 2013, Volume 7, Issue 3,   Pages 328-332 doi: 10.1007/s11684-013-0271-5

Abstract:

Minimally invasive surgical techniques, particularly endoscopic techniques, have revolutionized otolaryngeal surgery. Endoscopic techniques have been gradually applied in orbital surgery through the sinus inferomedial to the orbit and the orbital subperiosteal space. Endoscopic techniques help surgeons observe fractures and soft tissue of the posterior orbit to precisely place implants and protect vital structures through accurate, safe, and minimally invasive approaches. We reviewed the development of endoscopic techniques, the composition of endoscopic systems for orbital surgery, and the problems and developmental prospects of endoscopic techniques for simple orbital wall fracture repair.

Advanced Bioprocess Development and Manufacturing Technologies in High-Throughput Miniature Bioreactors

Jiao Peng, Chen Biqiang

Strategic Study of CAE 2016, Volume 18, Issue 4,   Pages 44-50 doi: 10.15302/J-SSCAE-2016.04.007

Abstract:

In recent years, the importance of rapid response time to virulent infectious disease is widely recognized. However, the traditional technologies for bioprocess development and manufacturing will not succeed in winning this war. US healthcare companies and related organizations including US Department of Human Health and Service, proposed and started working on the next generation of technology platforms for advanced bioprocess development and manufacturing (ABDM).The development of ABDM is to significantly reduce the timeframe for bioprocess development and manufacturing, making it possible to promptly respond to outburst of pandemic influenza and prevent it from outspreading. Meanwhile, the development of precision medicine also presents new demands to the biopharmaceutical industry. With the demand of small-scale production and fast turn-around time of precision medicine, the duration of development and manufacturing needs to be accelerated significantly. At the same time, the number of sub-groups of the product would increase, and the batch sizes and amount of final product would decrease, as well. To satisfy the demands of small-scale production and fast turnaround time of ABDM, micro- and mini-bioreactor is the key equipment. The major technologies of ABDM include high throughput screening and process development based on micro- and mini-bioreactors, disposable technology, modular unit operations and flexible manufacturing. The development of ABDM will directly strengthen the National Security, improve the welfare of the people, and it also provides great social and economic values. The impact of this platform will radiate to the entire biomanufacture industry, and open a whole new era for the bioprocess development and bio-manufacturing.

A three-dimensional measurement method for binocular endoscopes based on deep learning Research Article

Hao YU, Changjiang ZHOU, Wei ZHANG, Liqiang WANG, Qing YANG, Bo YUAN,yuanbo@zju.edu.cn

Frontiers of Information Technology & Electronic Engineering 2022, Volume 23, Issue 4,   Pages 653-660 doi: 10.1631/FITEE.2000679

Abstract: In the practice of clinical endoscopy, the precise estimation of the lesion size is quite significant for diagnosis. In this paper, we propose a three-dimensional (3D) measurement method for binocular endoscopes based on , which can overcome the poor robustness of the traditional binocular matching algorithm in texture-less areas. A simulated binocular image dataset is created from the target 3D data obtained by a 3D scanner and the binocular camera is simulated by 3D rendering software to train a model for 3D measurement. The experimental results demonstrate that, compared with the traditional binocular matching algorithm, the proposed method improves the accuracy and disparity map generation speed by 48.9% and 90.5%, respectively. This can provide more accurate and reliable lesion size and improve the efficiency of endoscopic diagnosis.

Ingestible wireless capsules for enhanced diagnostic inspection of gastrointestinal tract

Frontiers of Mechanical Engineering 2011, Volume 6, Issue 1,   Pages 40-44 doi: 10.1007/s11465-011-0204-4

Abstract:

Wireless capsule endoscopy has become a common procedure for diagnostic inspection of gastrointestinal tract. This method offers a less-invasive alternative to traditional endoscopy by eliminating uncomfortable procedures of the traditional endoscopy. Moreover, it provides the opportunity for exploring inaccessible areas of the small intestine. Current capsule endoscopes, however, move by peristalsis and are not capable of detailed and on-demand inspection of desired locations. Here, we propose and develop two wireless endoscopes with maneuverable vision systems to enhance diagnosis of gastrointestinal disorders. The vision systems in these capsules are equipped with mechanical actuators to adjust the position of the camera. This may help to cover larger areas of the digestive tract and investigate desired locations. The preliminary experimental results showed that the developed platform could successfully communicate with the external control unit via human body and adjust the position of camera to limited degrees.
